For assisting those with Mental Illness IN CASE OF A MENTAL ILLNESS EMERGENCY OR CRISIS ALWAYS CALL 911 !!!! If you are not a mental health professional, do not act as one. In dealing with person living with mental illness set boundaries as to what you can/will or cannot/will not do. Remember you and /or your Church have legal liabilities. Know what they are and how to deal within them. Keep a handy list of agencies and professionals you can give as referrals. Some possibilities are found elsewhere in this site. Prayer with the person is always appropriate, but never a substitute for professional intervention. For Parishes Reaching Out to People with Mental Illness and Their Families Set aside one Sunday a year to highlight issues (preferably in October during Mental Illness Awareness Week) Recognize mental illness as an illness, not a character flaw Include people on prayer lists as they seek treatment Establish a culture of acceptance and willingness in order to receive people with mental illness Include info on mental illness on “tract racks” Ask Outreach committees to consider funding requests for agencies that work with mentally ill. Provide room
for support groups to meet. (Questions about support groups in your area?
